Wikisource turns 10

November 24th marks the 10th anniversary of Wikisource, once known as Project Sourceberg. To celebrate its creation, book-lovers from around the globe are invited to participate in a proofreading competition held on November 24th. There will be three independent online proofreading contests: the Italian contest, the Catalan contest and the English contest, all of which are run by volunteers and members of the newly founded Wikisource Community User Group. The prizes are sponsored by Wikimedia Italy, Amical Wikimedia and Wikimedia UK, respectively.
Wikisource was born as a project where Wikipedia sources could be hosted to ensure total verifiability through an open proofreading process as guaranteed by the Proofread Page extension. Over time, Wikisource evolved into a more inclusive digital library, the workshop where public domain and freely licensed books are given a second digital life.
With the rise of e-readers and Open Access publications, the role of Wikisource as a provider of free and educational content is paramount. Students can access classical materials and researchers can be sure that what they see on the screen is what was printed on paper or published by a trusted source — all for free.
The 1.4 million proofread pages in 63 languages are a testament to the dedication of Wikisourcerors during all these years. The community is working hard to make the project more visible and inter-connected. Hopefully you can tell your friends about the contest as well as the trove of knowledge that is Wikisource!
